Tesla’s has confirmed that its annual “Battery Day” event will be held on September 22 this year. It will, of course, be live streamed to the masses.
During the event, the company is expected to share details about its current and future battery technologies. There will also be a (virtual) tour of its internal cell production. Company head Elon Musk is also expected to announce news about cheaper batteries. The big tease, though, is the possible revelation of a battery that can go a million miles over its lifetime.
A Million Mile Battery
Tesla has long set the battery range standard in the automotive world. Current Tesla vehicles average 400 miles per battery charge. It’s the best in the industry, with other brands playing catch up. However, Tesla has proven before that they are not a company that merely rests on its laurels when it comes to battery technology.
Musk announced in June that a tour of the company’s battery cell production will be part of this year’s Battery Day. He is widely expected to share information about a battery that has a million-mile life span. We also expect new information about about increased range, how Tesla is working on reducing cobalt in its battery packs, and falling battery prices. There is speculation that the technology is getting cheap enough for Tesla to offer less expensive vehicles with even more driving range.
The Battery Day event will take place on September 22 at the Tesla Fremont, California factory. The entire event will be live streamed on the internet starting at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
